Looking back on 2013, TripIt tells me: that I flew 130,000 miles or so, visited 40 cities in 11 countries all based on the information stored in their system about my trips. In terms of status, I have managed to retain my Diamond Membership with Hyatt: And flown over the 100,000 miles with United for…
2013: My year in 20 pictures
Last I produced a post for 2012 along the same lines – you can read it here. I took the time to pull together 20 pictures which I think capture some of the great travel experiences this year. So here goes for 2013. A great room at the Grand Hyatt, New York The First Class…
United updates Mileage Plus web display to accommodate new requirements
Luckily, outside the USA, United has not yet implemented the annual minimum spend to earn status, in addition to the mileage requirement. To accommodate this, United has updated its display on the web site. The non-US version looks like this: The new presentation seem clearer and highlights the key requirements. Happy New Year.
Were you impacted by the Meltdown at Gatwick – email for £100 in vouchers
In an unprecedented move, Gatwick airport is offering passengers £100 of UK High Street vouchers if they were impacted by the electrical problems that they had before Christmas. This really is remarkable, but I suspect may be an attempt to head off people claiming against them in the courts. Their press release and details of…
Holiday Inn Ariel, Heathrow – a cheap option for IHG’s The Big Win
Once of the best value hotels at Heathrow, especially for a weekend stay, is the Holiday Inn Ariel on the Bath Road at Harlington Corner. The circular hotel is about 10 minutes on a regular bus and it is (just) in the free Heathrow Travel Area. The hotel is usually busy and seems to only…
Change to the service on BA1, London City to New York, JFK – flying the baby bird again
For the uninitiated, BA operates a A318 from London City Airport to New York JFK, with a refuelling stop in Shannon, twice per day. The first flight is able to clear US Immigration and Customs in Shannon, whilst the later flight does this on arrival at JFK. The advantage of the pre-clearance is that you…
When not flying with BA (due to weather) means no refund AND no Avios!
This was the sight that awaited me at London City Airport a few weeks ago when fog descended on London and pretty much all of that days flights were cancelled. BA reassured us that we would be refunded, so you can imagine my surprise when I received this email at the weekend. I grant…
Intercontinental Hotel, Berlin – as part of IHG’s The Big Win promo.
I have stayed at the Intercontinental in Berlin before – you can read about my Club Intercontinental stay here. On this occasion as the stay was really for The Big Win promo from IHG I picked the cheapest room – a Superior Room. My guaranteed one room upgrade as an Intercontinental Ambassador member, the put…
Christmas is over – mark your January 2014 calendar – 6th and 31st are devaluation days
Time to start thinking about taking down the tree and decorations, working out who is going to be re-gifted with that sweater from Auntie, and how long you have to spend at the gym to work off the calories put on during Christmas. But don’t forget – DEVALUATIONS ARE COMING If you have a few…
Indigo Hotel, Berlin – as part of IHG’s The Big Win promo.
A few days ago I wrote a piece about Berlin probably being one of the most cost effective cities to stay if you want to qualify for IHG’s The Big Win promo in Q1 of 2014. You can find my reasoning here. Amongst the points I made were that IHG has a lot of properties…
