InterContinental to add 9 properties in the UK

It appears that the insatiable increase in size of the InterContinental Group has resumed in the UK. Following an agreement with Convivio they are to take on 12 existing properties and one more when it is opened. Most are in the Principal Group.

4 properties will sport the Kimpton branding – itself a group recently acquired by InterContinental. These properties are in London and Manchester in England and in Scotland, they are located in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Adding nicely to their properties in major UK business centres.

The London property, currently called the Principal, is a Grade II listed building with 334 rooms. It is located on Russell Square, close to the Underground station.

There are two properties in Edinburgh. The Principal George Street will become an Intercontinental, make the brands return to the City. The other property is the Principal Charlotte Square was built in 1791. They look spectacular, and seem to have been recently renovated.

The wide range of new properties will provide excellent use of IHG points at great new properties. Worth keeping an eye out as I think they are going to be in demand.

The Leeds property will become an Indigo whilst the Cardiff property, will become a voco which is a new brand for the UK.

  1. Both Edinburgh hotels are in the New Town (designed 1766/7) and have had recent expensive renovations from Principal hotels. I think the Charlotte Sq one is marginally better, so Kimpton are getting a good hotel and only 1 minutes walk from Princes Street.

  2. Errr, what about the Grand in Birmingham which is currently being seriously renovated but they haven’t decided what brand it will be yet?
