United to have its own club at Heathrow Terminal 2

Business Traveller is reporting that United is to have its own United Club at the new Terminal 2 at Heathrow. Destined to open for UA958 on 4 June 2014, the new Terminal is going to consolidate all of United’s Heathrow operations under one roof. The new terminal, designed to host Star Alliance carriers, will have a Star Alliance Lounge, and it appears will also have an Air Canada lounge.

I recall my first experience of the old, old Red Carpet Club at Terminal 3, the excitement of the new, old Red Carpet Club at Terminal 3 followed by the nice Star Alliance lounge at Terminal 1 and then the cheapening of this product as the food got worse and seating became more had to find. I hope the new United Club will not follow the model of CDG where United passengers were forced to use the United Club, and denied Star Alliance Lounge access for some time.

  1. I thought I saw a rumor that Delta will be moving over to the Virgin terminal (cant remember which terminal they are in, sorry). Have you heard this as well?

  2. Delta are in 4, the SkyTeam terminal so there’s no reason to move elsewhere. There were rumours of virgin moving to them but I doubt they’ll want to because of how comfortable they are in 3 with their business class desperate checkin area the clubhouse space.

  3. Consolidating United’s operations under one roof impacts 2 destinations – Houston & New York (Newark) that are currently at Terminal 4. There currently isn’t any spare capacity at Terminal 3 to accommodate Delta, so just a rumour for now. You might see this happening when an airline moves from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2.

Aegean, Air Canada, Air China, ANA, Egyptair, Ethiopian, EVA Air, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways & Turkish Airlines are scheduled to move to Terminal 2 so this will free up space in Terminal 3.

‘November 2014 or later’ is the furtherest out date for moves so you may not see Delta moving into Terminal 3 until all of the airlines have moved.

Virgin also want Little Red to move to Terminal 3 – it’s a high priority for Virgin as it’ll mean easy transfer to / from long-haul flights. I’m not sure if there are any domestic gates at Terminal 3 – does anyone know?
