Florida repeals requirement for UK drivers to have International Drivers License

Very quietly, on 1 January 2013, the State of Florida enacted a requirement that all foreign drivers required an International Drivers License in addition to their home country’s license. This appears to have been a measure to accommodate non-English licenses but has caused problems for drivers who arrived in Florida, unaware of the reuqirement and unable to collect their rental car.

Quite quickly the Florida Highway Patrol indicated that they would not enforce the requirement.

The official announcement is here.

Kevin McGurgan, Consul General of the UK said, “I welcome the repeal of the international driving license law. If implemented, this legislation would have unnecessarily affected many of the 1.5 million UK nationals who visit Florida annually.”
