How the BA status extension works

I wrote yesterday (as did almost everyone else) about BA waking up on elite status extensions.

It’s quite a generous offer :

  • If your status year expires between July 2020 and June 2021, you get an automatic years extension at the same status level.
  • If you manage to earn Tier Points you can cross tiers in this time for a lower number of Tier Points:
    • Bronze: 225 Tier Points or 18 eligible flights
    • Silver: 450 Tier Points or 37 eligible flights
    • Gold: 1125 Tier Points
  • These changes do apply to Gold Guest List status and Concorde Room Cards

As I have requalified in May, and so my status was good anyway to May 2021, I wrote to BA yesterday to ask what happens with me. They came back within 30 minutes to confirm:

  • In May 2021 I will get a the one year free extension to both Gold Guest List and Concorde Room status taking me to May 2022.
  • However, as the 25% status reduction expires in June 2021,  from May 2022 to  May 2023 I will have to accumulate 3000 Tier Points for Gold Guest List and 5000 for Concorde Room renewal.

Seems fair – I don’t have to worry about Tier Points for effectively 18 months and just need to have 3000/5000 Tier Points between on 8 May 2023.
